Time Management Isn’t Working? Let’s Talk About Your Energy Instead

You know that feeling when you’ve perfectly planned your day, organized your calendar into neat little blocks, and still end up exhausted by 3 PM?

I’ve been there too. Here’s the thing – we’ve been focusing on the wrong currency. While everyone’s talking about time management, what we really need to look at is our energy.

Emotions are literally energy in motion. Every time you step into that meeting room or jump on a video call, you’re not just spending time; you’re investing energy.

And let’s be honest about those emotional waves that hit us throughout the day. That client meeting where expectations weren’t met? It doesn’t just end when you click “leave meeting” –that disappointment lingers.

Or that interaction that left you feeling drained, where no matter how much you gave, it didn’t feel enough? These emotions don’t just evaporate; they travel with us, coloring our next interactions, sometimes even seeping into the next day.

We often find ourselves carrying yesterday’s emotional baggage into today’s meetings. That frustration from a difficult client conversation might show up in how we respond to our team later. Right?

Or that sense of not being enough might impact how confidently we present our next proposal. It’s a cycle that can be hard to break, especially when we’re just focusing on managing our time rather than our emotional energy.

Being more aware of your energy before engaging with others can be a game-changer.

Before your next important meeting, pause for a moment. How are you feeling? Are you bringing your full presence, or are you carrying the weight of the last three conversations? I recently found myself nodding along in a crucial client meeting, realizing I hadn’t actually processed a word they’d said because I was still mentally stuck in my previous call.

Here’s where many of us struggle (myself included) – we see those blessed gaps in our calendar and immediately think, “Perfect! I can fit in that quick catch-up call!” STOP. Just STOP!

That white space in your calendar? It’s not empty time waiting to be filled. It’s your recharge zone, your breathing space, your mental reset button. It’s where you can process those complex emotions, let go of what’s draining you, and rebuild your emotional reserves.

I learned this the hard way. Those 30-minute breaks between meetings weren’t meant for “just a quick chat” or catching up on emails. They’re meant for you to decompress, reflect, and rebuild your energy. It’s like trying to drive cross-country without fuel stops – eventually, you’re going to sputter to a halt.

The real challenge isn’t finding more hours in the day – it’s protecting your energy during the hours you have. I now treat my energy like my most precious resource. Before saying yes to anything, I ask myself, “Do I have the energy for this, not just the time?” Sometimes that means acknowledging when a particularly challenging interaction has depleted me and giving myself permission to recover before diving into the next task.

Being aware of and conserving your energy isn’t just some trendy wellness concept – it’s the key to sustainable performance. When you start paying attention to your energy levels and honoring them, something magical happens: you show up more fully for the moments that truly matter, and you’re better equipped to handle those emotional waves that come with leadership.

So next time someone asks about your time management strategy, maybe tell them you’re focusing on energy management instead. Because at the end of the day, it’s not about how many hours you put in – it’s about how much of yourself you can bring to those hours, and how well you can navigate the emotional currents that come with them.

What about you? Have you noticed how different your day feels when you protect your energy versus just managing your time?
